WINTER EYE CARE TIPS
Many people wrongly assume they only need to worry about
protecting their eyes during the hot, humid summer
months.
We hear a lot about harmful ultraviolet rays during June,
July and August, but did you know that these rays
are just as damaging during December and January? In fact,
ultraviolet rays can be even more detrimental during Winter months
if you happen to live in an area where it snows as ultraviolet rays
are easily reflected off the light surface area. Protecting your
vision should be on your agenda every month of the year.
Here are three important winter eye care tips:
1. YOU SHOULD WEAR PROTECTIVE SUNGLASSES ALL YEAR, not just in the
summer. Wearing protective sunglasses helps prevents 99 – 100% of
harmful ultraviolet rays from reaching your eyes. Not wearing
sunglasses can result in sunburned eyes and vision damage,
especially if you live in a climate where it snows often. An
additional benefit of wearing sunglasses is that they protect your
eyes from harmful wind and cold.
2. YOU SHOULD DRESS APPROPRIATELY TO KEEP YOUR EYES SAFE during the
winter. Consider purchasing a brimmed hat, a hooded jacket or coat
and wraparound sunglasses to keep your eyes and skin safe during
the Winter months. The right clothes can also prevent tears from
evaporating in your eyes which will help prevent dry, scratchy
eyes.
3. CONSIDER PURCHASING A HUMIDIFIER AND EYE DROPS TO KEEP YOUR EYES
SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. Many families purchase indoor heating
systems to stay warm and comfortable during the winter months.
Unfortunately, these heating systems can dry the air in your home
which can result in scratchy, irritated eyes. Purchasing a
humidifier and keeping eye drops on hand will help prevent dry
eyes.
It’s important to keep your eyes protected during the entire year,
not just the summer. We hope you found our three important winter
eye care tips useful.
